A PLAYING APPROACH TO A ROCK TRACK

How open are your ideas when approaching a rock track? Using a Jan Hammer/Jeff Beck style track (included as a playalong), Gary shows the creative process of laying down a strong drum part. See below for full details.
"I like the approach where you focus a lot on how one can interpret a piece of music on drums, and how different directions artistically can make the music interesting and creative. Very unique in these “all about technique”- times as far as instruction is concerned. I HIGHLY recommend anyone to buy your material. Sharing detailed information like this as you do, as one of the greatest musicians on the planet, is just fantastic!! Thank you."

Part of the Playing Approach Series, this videocast focuses on approaches to playing rock - a style of music which has featured heavily in Gary’s broad career, from his work behind the kit with such greats as Jack Bruce, Gary Moore, Robin Trower, Chris Squire, Guthrie Gohan, Andy Summers, Billy Sherwood, Eddie Van Halen, Tony Levin, Steve Hackett, Neil Murray, Mick Taylor and the bands UK and Soft Machine.

As a means of demonstrating how he approaches this genre, he uses a track that he has created specifically for the videocast (evoking a Jan Hammer and Jeff Beck style) and takes you through the creative and analytical process he employs to put together a strong and effective drum part for the track.

Giving examples of beats and patterns along the way, Gary presents two ‘passes’ at the track and diagnoses and analyses the ideas that came to him spontaneously in the case of the first pass, or after more considered reflection in the second pass. He shows, amongst other things, how changing the mainstay beat (double time vs half time) and dynamic build, for example, dramatically impacts the overall feel of the music, and leaves it for you decide which works best.

The videocast package includes a drum-less play-along version of this rocking track (both with and without click) and a drum guide PDF for you to download and experiment with for yourself.
