In this videocast, Gary looks at interpreting a jazz/rock or fusion track and highlights many of the considerations that go into finding great beats for this genre of music for which he has a long and impressive track record.
He gives a brief account of his own involvement in this vernacular and how much it has contributed to his own evolution and development as a musician.
Then, using as an example a strong, pulsating piece of music that he has created and performed specifically for this - one inspired by Miles Davis in the mid-80s - he takes you, in real-time, through the creative and analytical processes that work for him in putting together an effective and powerful drum part for the track.
Giving examples of beats along the way together with a range of tips and suggestions, Gary presents two ‘passes’ at the track and talks you through the ideas that come to him either spontaneously in the case of the first pass, or after a more diagnostic and considered application in the second pass.
