Part of the Odd Time Signature Series, this videocast explores the intricacies of playing in 5/4 as well as feeling and phrasing odd groupings of five. Gary takes you through a selection of effective exercises he has developed to expand your command of '5', to explore sub-divisions within '5' and to challenge your rhythmic independence via ‘compound’ exercises that deal with simultaneously merging groupings of 4 over those of 5, and vice versa. All exercises also come with the package in notated form as downloadable PDFs.

In Gary’s words, these exercises will “open up new possibilities in your musical imagination as you work to integrate them into your drumming language and to have them more accurately start to inform and eventually enrich your creativity”.

He highlights the rhythmic phrasing device (conceptualised by John McLaughlin), known as the “transition point”, as a means to help you maintain a consistent flow of '5', and demonstrates ways for you to gain a fluidity, fluency and confidence which ultimately gives you the freedom to play with ease within and around the count of five.
