Gary introduces the topic of soloing in this videocast and examines the process and means of developing spontaneous creativity within different types of drum solo. He examines the concept of solos of a pre-determined length, ‘free’ ie non-specific length solos, solos that introduce a piece of music or take it to a bridge section, and solos played over a motif.
He presents various ideas that can be useful to consider when approaching the solo, as well as when shaping it, and suggests exploring more creative means of developing a solo rather than throwing everything you’ve got at it. He encourages experimentation to allow your ideas and confidence to grow and, to this end, performs three tracks - all very different in mood and soloing requirements - that you can in turn play with and practice on to help explore and develop your own creativity.
Two of the three downloadable drum-less mp3 tracks (both with and without click) also come with a chart/drum guide.
